Notes on accessibility
We want this site to be usable by everyone, including with a screen reader, without a mouse, and with limited vision. Our benchmark is WCAG 2.2, level AA.
What is implemented
All content is reachable by keyboard, the focus indicator is visible and follows the reading order. While the mobile menu is open, the rest of the page is made inert for keyboard and screen reader, so that focus cannot slip behind the menu.
Headings are marked up hierarchically and every page has exactly one H1. Landmarks for header, navigation, content and footer are in place, and a skip link leads straight to the content.
The site currently contains no images that carry content. The only graphic, a scale drawing on the homepage, is decorative, hidden from screen readers, and its statement is repeated beside it as text.
Text and background reach a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1, and large text at least 3 to 1. Body text has a line height of 1.7.
Text can be enlarged to 200 percent without losing content or forcing horizontal scrolling. All measurements are relative.
Form fields have visible labels that stay in place. Errors are named in plain words next to the field concerned rather than marked by colour alone, and are additionally exposed via aria-invalid and aria-describedby.
There is no auto-playing media, nothing that flashes, and no time limit. Anyone who has set reduced motion in their operating system gets no transitions.
The language of each page is declared in the source. The language switch carries the target language on the link itself, so that a screen reader pronounces it correctly.
The site works without JavaScript. Without a script the mobile menu stays expanded rather than operable; all content and the contact form remain usable.
What is not yet met
- The site has so far been tested against evaluation tools and by keyboard, but not yet with people who rely on assistive technology every day.
- A pass with VoiceOver and NVDA across all pages is still outstanding.
- As soon as images of works are added they will need alternative texts describing material, format and site situation. Until then there is nothing here to explain.
